DISCOVER ADOPTION SUPPORT LI

What is it?

Welcome to Adoption Support LI! I created this website to provide resources for local families who have adopted kid(s) that may face anxieties due to their adoption.

Why Am I Doing This?

For much of my later life, I struggled with anxiety and OCD and I couldn’t quite understand it. I thought there was something wrong with me. Through the media and growth, I realized this is common for many people. Though, I wanted to understand my own relationship with my mental health and began to research. Many websites stated that mental health issues may run in the family, but I didn’t know my biological parents. This was the spark I was looking for. Some quick google searches allowed me to conclude that my adoption may have been the root of my anxiety and that many other adoptees have a very similar experience. We get the rug pulled out from us at such a young age. That connection felt when the mother first holds their child, vanishes. Many stay in a corrupt system for a long time, developing a feeling that they are not wanted. I wanted to help these kids that are in similar situations as myself, those who struggle with mental health and may not understand the origin. Therefore, I started my Girl Scout Gold Award project based on this idea. I felt it was important to highlight something that is often not recognized by adopted parents or the child themself. If awareness is raised and adoptees are able to recognize the issue, we can begin to eradicate that poor feeling and create a better world for adoptees.

ABOUT ME

Zoe Feigel

Hi! I'm Zoe. I am the creator of Adoption Support LI. This project is a result of my own personal struggles and research with adoption and anxiety. I have been a girl scout since I was in kindergarten and when the time rolled around to create a gold award project I knew that I wanted it to be personal and something that would be able to touch the lives of people similar to myself.

I attend the George Washington University where I will be majoring in both International Affairs and Anthropology in hopes of gaining more cultural and political awareness.

The Adoption Symbol

"The adoption symbol is a triangle intertwined with a
heart and is a symbol for both domestic and international adoptions.  The
Birth Family, the Adoptive Family and the Adoptee each represent one side of
the triangle and the heart intertwining each side of the triangle represents
the love that is involved in an adoption."
